Beyond the Ashes is a wonderful, historical romance set in San Francisco in 1906, after the devastating earthquake and the fires that followed. The main storyline follows Dr. Gerald Larkspur and Nurse Ruby King Marshall as a budding romance seems to be flowering. On the other hand there are many obstacles, including the handsome and charming Reverend Patrick Allison.

What I enjoyed most about this story is its complexity and numerous subplots, the aftermath of the earthquake being fertile ground for many twists and turns in the story. The early twentieth century was also a prime time of advances in medicine and in machines, such as the X-ray machine and the automobile. Socially, old customs and attitudes seem to be easing toward more freedom and independence for women. All these things together make a very interesting and compelling novel.

Spiritually, this book has much to offer. A major theme is trusting in God and accepting His plans for our lives. We see characters struggling with this, as we all do or have done at times in our lives.

Although, Beyond the Ashes is the second book in The Golden Gate Chronicles. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. If you like historical romance, I think you will find this book to be a good one.
