As you might guess from the title, this is a fun Sherlockian story. Old Red and Big Red, two brothers known for their red hair, have lost all their family and are barely getting by. Old Red may be illiterate but he loves to hear Big Red read him the Sherlock Holmes stories in the magazines. Old Red has them memorized and takes Holmes' lessons to heart. Dead broke, they get hired on a ranch with a suspicious set of managers. When a wrangler is found shot dead in the outhouse, Old Red sees his chance to put his deductive powers to the test, and makes a wager he can solve the case. Big Red isn't so sure about all this, and he's mostly clueless about the clues, but he'll back his brother to the death. It's all a lot of fun with a clever mystery to be solved. I'm not sure from the text if Sherlock Holmes is real or not in this universe, but Old Red surely thinks he is. I loved Big Red's commentary on the events and the old-timey Western lingo. This is the first of 5 in a series.
