Armintrout's vampire novels are an interesting mixture of action and psychology. I like how "realistic" the characters are. Their feelings for each other are complicated and ambivalent and they often can't figure out what they really want or feel. As a result, even though it's the usual supernatural plot line, they have relationships that are kind of a mess and do things that they don't entirely mean or understand, which makes them more like people you'd actually know than the kind of heroes you tend to see in thrillers and romances. Cyrus returns from the dead in gradually learns what it is to love someone. That story is really heartbreaking, and I was surprised by how much it moved me. Poor Carrie has to face some truths about Nathan. The supporting characters are fun and keep the book from sinking under the drama. I'm looking forward to the next installment.
