At first I thought this book a little dusty and stale, the story is of two middle-aged spinsters in a small English village where all entertaining and amusement seems based in and around the church. But Barbara Pym's writing is hilarious, and I devoured this in 24 hours. There were marriage proposals, fashion, international travel, and droll and witty turns of phrase. I totally identified with Belinda the elder sister, a character who is more inside her head than even I could ever be.
