A true story about an extraordinary connection between a grandfather and grandson. As Max Apple grows up, he learns from his scrappy five-foot tall Herman "Rocky" Goldstein. The Goldstein's are a boisterous, bantering Michigan family. Max moves into Rocky's room at age 7, later Rocky, at 93, becomes Max's unconventional roommate during Max's studies at graduate school. Rocky is opinionated, determined and at times fierce. Rocky nearly wrecks Max's chance for romance. But, Rocky was also a man whose credo "be Strong" becomes the foundation of his grandson's life. When tragedy strikes Max, his wife, and their two small children, it is Rocky, at age 103 who takes over and shows them how to face life and death, and finally how to heal.
