I delayed reading this because I thought it would be depressing. The prologue was a downer. Once I started reading, however, I couldn't put it down until the book was finished - staying up all night.
Again Sherry Thomas draws unique and interesting characters who don't quite fit the typical mold of historical romance. No blushing virgins or unsullied heroes for Thomas. The protagonists are real and dirty yet Thomas seduces you to keep reading with terrific story telling. With their human foibles and mistakes the hero and heroine are still appealing and the romance is gratifying.
The story is a bit sad, but Thomas gets to the romance fairly quickly and though they have much to resolve, I was pleased with how she paced and expressed the rekindling of feelings. You felt sorry for them both, the heroine painted with a more "ugly" brush than the hero for most of the book when things are finally explained.
I also enjoyed Thomas' style of exposition - flashbacks that fit the present situation in the story. However if she does this in every book, it would drive me nuts.
The sensuality in this book is steamy but limited, although fairly frequent. Thomas's love scenes are sexy but brief.
Overall, Sherry Thomas is on my must read list.
