I thought this was an excellent book and it didn't make any difference at all whether it was his accurate story or not, it was a good story. I liked how the writing is all fragmented and disjointed in the beginning and slowly gets more proper as he makes progress, I thought that was a little touch of genius. I think his portrayal was accurate and either he was an addict at some point or he researched them well because it can easily get that bad. It was a little too complimentary to the narrator in a few spots, he always seems to do the right thing or be on the correct side, but I knew before reading it was fictional so it was ok. While finding out what happened to his friends depressed me I know it was accurate with the crappy success rates rehab and AA have. I can't imagine a rehab facility allowing someone as much freedom to customize their treatment as much as he did, that was a stretch for me. But again, I knew it was fiction. It's a compelling book and it is full of bad language and worse situations but if you pick up the memoir of a heroin addict and don't expect that then I just don't know what to tell you.
