From Library Journal
Oral history of what it was like flying fighters in World Wars I and II, Korea, and Vietnam, with the voices of 27 pilots whose individual combats got them five victories or more each. Their descriptions of air-to-air combat are sometimes told in thoughtful and measured language, but more often with remembered excitement and fear coloring the words they use. Intended primarily for an audience with war and flying as focus, these stories recall the times in which they occurred, with unexpectedly vivid details. Foss (winner of the Congressional Medal of Honor for action in the Pacific during World War II) and Brennan (helicopter pilot in Vietnam) add a page each of introduction, but the stage belongs to the aces themselves. Informative, thought-provoking, and often compelling reading.
