Capt. Cousteau's problems are considered in detail, so this is not a pretty story. There are a few pictures, including of the Calypso. It seems to me he was always scrambling for funding. Even with the successful ABC series, eventually they weren't on the same page, ratings being very important to the broadcaster. "Television diverted Cousteau from further efforts to research the ocean environment, to improve diving technology, or to expand undersea habitation."
