I expected this book to be an Arthurian fantasy but instead it was an adventure set (mostly) in an alternate modern-day England. Arianrhod (who prefers to be called Roddy), the daughter of a weather wizard, accidentally turns up an evil plot in the middle of the Kings Progress. But everyone seems to be convinced that since shes a kid, shes got things wrong and that the Merlin, the Kings main adviser, must be incorruptible and above reproach. Attempting magic to summon wizardly help, she contacts a boy from another realm altogether but Nick, although hed like to learn magic, is rather lost himself.
This YA novel was a thoroughly enjoyable book I liked it MUCH better than Fire and Hemlock, the last book I read by Wynne Jones. Its a must for any fans of her Chrestomanci series.
