I'm fairly new to the scene of post-apocalyptic tales, so they're still quite thrilling as a whole. And while the first half delivers (the arrival of Them, surviving in a world of silence, fear, and unspeakable violence), by the time Amy and Baby are "rescued," (the cat is out of the bag now), the plot turns more sinister, suspicious and secretive; a power-hungry, sadistic leader; a dystopian society meant to control the grateful survivors; punish the rebels (those who catch on to anything outside of the new norm) with medical lockup and scientific experimentation, and if that isn't enough, procreation regulation (right, we're back to that). And that's just with the HUMANS. The aliens have their own explanations. It's a fast read, and the first half is great, but the rest killed the initial thrill with revelations I've read before, leaving me disappointed and feeling somewhat scammed. 3.5 stars.
