One of these painful effects is codependency: the compulsion to rescue and control others. Also, a host of corollary characteristics can plague a codependent: being driven to succeed and to please people, perfectionism, withdrawal, being unable to say "no," being easily manipulated by others, self-condemnation, intense hurt, anger, guilt and loneliness.
