from the cover:

Private eye Sharon McCone takes on a routine surveillance one weekend as a favor to Rudy Goldring, a longtime client of her employer, the All Souls Legal Cooperative. She tails one Frank Wilkinson through Golden Gate Park's tropical gardens, the early morning flower market, and other horticultural landmarks. The man's business seems personal and entirely harmless, Sharon concludes... but when she arrives at Goldring's downtown office to report, she finds the elderly shirtmaker dead in a pool of blood.
