Ralph Compton may not have written this one as he died in 1998, but it's a good Western and he would have enjoyed it. I know I did, and my standard for Westerns is high.
It's a story about a drifter---who couldn't hit a barn door with a shotgun---on the run to save his life, when he stumbles upon a major crime and ends up having to pretend he is a Federal marshal. Then there are the two lovely ladies he has to save while he tries to prevent a bloodbath in West Texas. Oh, did I forget to mention the Apaches, the Comancheros and the crooked railroad detectives? The author almost didn't leave any room for the Texas Rangers and the U.S. Cavalry, but they made it into the story too.
