I love reading about strong women and Clara Slabaughcertainly was that. Burned as a child with hot oil, she has undergone many surgeries but still carries scars on her face and arm. No one in Sugarcreek seems to want to court her, so she becomes the school teacher, resigned to being alone for the rest of her life, caring for her aging mother. But when Tim Graber comes to Sugarcreek from Indiana to help on his uncle's farm, he meets Clara and an immediate bond is formed between them. Tim has a girlfriend back in Indiana but what he feels for Clara is different than what he feels for Ruby. When Tim invites Ruby to visit, he realizes that she is not the woman for him and send her back to Indiana. Tim is able to see past Clara's scars deep into her heart which is kind and gentle. Eventually the disappearance of two boys during a rain storm brings the community together, including Clara and Tim. Clara's unhappy comes around and offers to move in with one of Clara's married sisters so Clara and Tim can stay in Sugarcreek and farm the land as Tim wants to do. They work through all of these obstacles and agree to marry. This was a very heartwarming storm of strength, perseverance and love. Shelley has another winner here and I can't wait to start Autumn's Promise.
