Let me start off this review by saying this, Amish stories are not on my top reading list. The old order Mennonites and the "plain" people are areas I prefer to keep at arms length. But this author here, Kim Vogel Sawyer, just happens to be on my have-to-read list. So when this one popped up for review, I decided to go for it. What would take place other than me finding yet another Amish novel I didn't really care for. Let's just say that I found quite the opposite to be true:)
When Grace Sings is the second book in the Zimmerman Restoration Trilogy. There are several individuals I would say are main characters but the plot I realized was very interesting. The book opens with a newspaper reporter in Chicago, Briley Forrester, being sent on a mission to show everyone that the Amish are not all as happy as they seem. You know how it appears to all of us outsiders? That they are peaceful, wise, content to live the plain life. Well Briley and his boss think that underneath their calm exterior, there is discontent and unhappiness. So what better than to do an article and expose them for what they really are? Briley heads off to Arborville, Kansas to spend several weeks living among them. He stays at the bed and breakfast run by Alexa Zimmerman and her grandmother. This gets a little confusing explaining here but Alexa also has other guests, one of which is another main character. Steven, who is engaged to Anna-Grace Braun, who also happens to be Alexa's cousin. As I told you, a bit confusing:)
The story line is one of the things that drew me to this book. It was different than most Amish type plots and I loved how it played out through the book. Briley is an obstinate but adorable guy who flirts with all the women, no matter their age. Needless to say Alexa's grandmother wants him gone while Alexa finds herself liking him just a bit. I felt bad for Steven. Wow! His story is sad but yet turns around to some degree. My favorite character by far was Alexa. I think I saw myself in her and connected quite a bit. But I really loved them all and cannot wait for the third book in the series. Don't leave us waiting too long Mrs Sawyer! This book receives a 5 out of 5 stars from me:)
