Detectives Zack Jordan and Kylie MacDonald work in the elite task forced assigned to protect the rich, the famous, and the connected. Jordan and MacDonald are the best of the best.
It's another fancy movie premiere when a starlet, dripping in diamonds on loan, is the target of a theft and winds of dead. There are many, many witnesses, but no suspects.
At the same time hospitals all over the city are reporting thefts ... not drugs, but medical equipment ... equipment that costs millions of dollars. The new mayor wants NYPD Red to investigate on the sly.. in other words, keep it out of the newspapers so the mayor isn't embarrassed.
And while trying to catch all the bad guys, their personal lives seem to be falling apart. Kylie's husband is a drug addict. He has walked out of rehab and is determined to live the life he wants ... until it kills him. Kylie is trying to find him before he winds up dead in some dirty alley.
Zach's girlfriend has moved in with him on a trial basis ... and it's not working the way they both expected. He's working night and day ... and his partner just happens to be an old fling ... and the girlfriend is getting a little tired of broken dates and being alone.
This reads fine as a stand-alone, but I would highly recommend reading them in order. This is a typical Patterson book ... short chapters, easy reading.
Zack and Kylie are great characters. I love how they interact with each other ... lots of humor and loyalty. Their personal lives might be a mess, but they have each others' backs.
