This was a compelling read and I really wanted to know what happened. At 660 pages it's quite a commitment. I sometimes felt like it was a mash-up of lots of snippets from other works (the train scene from Indiana Jones, the school from Harry Potter, the weird other world from Stranger Things). The world building was impressive, but the character motivations are still kind of confused for me. If you're in the mood for a long, dark (aka high body count) fantasy give it a try.
