MEDITATION FOR WIMPS spoke to me in the bookstore. The pages were uncluttered and color photos showed just what the author meant in her instructions. Realizing I can do this, I rushed home to try the exercises on for size.
Meditation is one of the most important gifts we can give ourselves. Why? We live in a world of increased speed, louder noise and negative notions. By quieting the mind, we give ourselves a chance to stop the chatter and breathe.
Why is that important? As we become more stressed, our breathing becomes shallower and we get less oxygen than our bodies need. This increases our stress. One of the techniques for meditation is becoming aware of our breath; this keeps us in the moment and helps our bodies relax and become more tranquil.
Here are the section headings:
- Getting Started
- Instant Meditation
- Quieting the Mind
- Fix-Its
- Going Deeper: The Spiritual Aspect of Meditation
Oddly enough, I found this book to be more helpful than a CD because I could read the instructions, get into the zone and start. With a CD, I was rushed to stay up with the leader (which managed to up my stress level).
For a beginning student of meditation, I found some parts particularly helpful. In the fix-its section, there were a number of suggestions for meditations:
- The Loving Kindness Meditation
- Chakra Meditations
- The White Light Meditation
- Overcoming Anger
- Overcoming Indecision
- Overcoming Fear and Other Obstacles
- Self-Acceptance Meditation
- Accepting Life Meditation
- Relationship Meditations
- Forgiveness Meditations
- Compassion Meditation
