In this, the fourth book in a five book series by Hannah March (actually Tim Wilson), down-on-his-luck, poor Robert Fairfax is happy to obtain a job tutoring two young sons of a wealthy sugar importer. But the sons are away. Fortunately, until they return, his new boss wants him to investigate his daughter and her husband, a Lord. This quickly turns into a murder investigation.
Fairfax's journeys through all levels of London society make this an interesting read. His own privileged youth sometimes surprises other characters with his abilities to blend in and deal with both the scions of high society as well as London's riff-raff, some of which belong in both classes. The tale takes place in the 1760s, with occasional reference to the American colonies and a recent war with France. The medical practices of the late 18th century play an important role in Fairfax's ensuing investigation.
