Although I was really excited to read this book (moved it to the top of my TBR pile) I was horribly dissapointed. The plot seemed to drag and the entire drama of the heroine's brother's crimes seemed contrived and pointless. Worst of all was the seeming lack of chemistry between the main characters. Although I appreciated the honest portrayl of class division in 19th century England it did not help the plot one bit. The heroine's previous of affair with the novel's villian only seems to portray her complete idiocy and does nothing to endear her to the reader.
I haven't read any other novels of Madeline Hunter so I am not sure if the distant characters are her "style" or if this book is just a poor example of her work.
