When Prudence Goode learns she is engaged to an unfaithful rogue, she decides she deserves one night of desire with a man of her choice before marrying the man her father picked. Chief Inspector Carlton Morley has donned a mask to become the Knight of Shadows, a vigilante who is cleaning up the streets of London. When Pru literally lands in his lap and mistakes him for a prostitute, Morley cannot stop himself from agreeing to her offer. One night of passion leaves them both stunned.

Three months later they meet again under very different circumstances. Pru finds herself the main suspect in a murder that Morley is investigating. She pleads her innocence, but Morley doesn't know if he can believe her. He vows to find the truth; but knows he will never willingly send her to the gallows.

Since reading the first book in the Victorian Rebels series, I've been waiting for Carlton Morley to meet his match. Pru turned out to be the perfect woman for him. Their chemistry was off-the-charts and their romance was very satisfying. This could have been a 5-star book, but there was just something missing. We really weren't involved with Morley's investigation into the murder. We knew he was working night and day on the case, but we were left in the dark about what he had learned and who he talked to. I think this kept me from giving the book a better rating. Still, I loved the romance. My rating: 4 Stars.
