In Moon Called, the girl-next-door gets involved in a werewolf war. Mercy Thompson has her hands full because she is so embedded in the underground werewolf culture of her town in Washington state. Mercy isn't a werewolf herself''she can actually change into a coyote''but her neighbor is the Alpha male of the local pack, and that's where the trouble begins.
Author Patricia Briggs successfully creates Mercy as a likable protagonist and narrator. Mercy is single, half Native-American, a mechanic with her own shop, raised by werewolves, a shapeshifter, gutsy, and she also has a big heart. If she weren't so fictional, I'd have a crush on her.
Briggs' breezy writing style makes this story fun to read; lots of witty banter between characters and the first person narrative helps us get to know Mercy rather well. Briggs introduces many other interesting characters''werewolfs, witches, vampires and other "fae"''even though the book isn't that long. Each character, however, does have a purpose. All the male werewolfs happen to be hunks in their human form, but I guess this is to give our protagonist some potential romantic distraction from all the craziness surrounding her. According to the author's website, Mercy Thompson will have at least a couple more books in which she is the protagonist. Looking forward to reading them.
