A very quick read - the font size is large, as are the margins. The book was a bit too simplistic for my taste. Even as a young adult I would have found the situations implausible. The characters were not very robust and were quite stereotypical. The basic premise is interesting, but other than setting it in the world of alchemists, the plot devices were pretty standard and overused. I never once felt the need to know what was going to happen next, nor did I care about any of the characters. Major action scenes were resolved in a couple of pages with almost no build up or tension. The bad guys look like bad guys and the good guys look like good guys. There are so many other, more complex books out there with original ideas, that I would be hard pressed to recommend this book. One nice aspect of this book is that there is no cussing or explicit sex. Suitable for young teens, but for a generation raised on Harry Potter, this would be boring. Perhaps the sequel (due out in 2012) will be better, but I doubt I will bother to find out. (2 stars)
