Romance novelist Susannah Kingston is looking for the hero of her next novel when she finds an old photograph of the Lakota warrior Black Wind. A visit to an Indian pow wow and a mysterious prayer feather thrust her back to 1870 Fort Collier, where Black Wind is a prisoner.
Despite the language barrier, the two become soul mates. One night, fate intervenes and they escape. Black Wind returns to his village, but Susannah is not welcomed, especially by his betrothed, who accuses her of being a witch and demands her death.
The lovers escape once again with both the cavalry and the Indians on their trail. With nowhere to turn, Black Wind and Susannah can only hope for a miracle.
