Book Review of Dark Horses and Black Beauties: Animals, Women, A Passion

Dark Horses and Black Beauties: Animals, Women, A Passion
reviewed on

Based on the description, I thought this book would explore more fully the relationship between women and horses, and why so many of us are drawn to them, especially early and late in life. It turned out to be more about how poorly humans have treated horses, complete with painful descriptions that I ended up skipping. There were some insightful passages, and some well-told stories from the author's own life. She clearly loves horses, but the booked lacked focus and hence cohesion and meaning for me.
If you want to learn more about how we can be better people for knowing horses, read The Power of the Herd by Linda Kohanov.
