Jessica Matthews Wednesday night started out typically enough, until she discovered that her 14 year old son Bryan had conveniently forgotten to take the household trash to the curb before going to bed at 10pm. So, grumbling to herself about irresponsibility, Jessica finds herself hauling the two huge trash bins herself, when a huge creature knocks her down, tears her throat open, and sucks the blood from her body until she dies. She awakes in a sterile room, sucking the femoral artery of an absolutely gorgeous, entirely nude man. Thus begins Jessicas new life - her afterlife.
Jessica of course has a lot to learn about her new existence. The Consortium plans to take over Broken Heart, Oklahoma, and they need her cooperation and assistance, but she still has some emotional baggage from her living life that needs to be dealt with as well. Add a couple of German werewolves, a rogue lycan, dead bodies popping up all over town, sizzling sexual encounters, and a centuries-old prophesy involving the ring Jessica inherited from her grandmother, and you have the basis for an unusually good story.
When I first picked up this book, I wasnt entirely sure what to expect. But Jessicas practical, down-to earth manner and her rapier wit made me feel like I was reading about a good friend from the very beginning. I found myself having a lot of trouble putting this book down once I started reading it, and now I am looking forward to reading the next four books in Michelle Bardsleys Broken Heart Vampires series!
