Naomi Roth has lived in New Hampshire for nearly a decade--and she is still an outsider. Also an outsider--though native born--is Heather Pratt a seemingly serene, self-contained young woman who's made the mistake of having an affair with a married man and unapologetically bearing his child.
Now, Naomi has found the body of a newborn baby floating in the Sabbathday River. After suspecting Naomi first, the police have turned their attention to Heather recently rumored to be hiding another scandalous pregnancy. And Heather has confessed. Naomi, convinced that the police arent telling the truth, now believes that Heather isn't either. But as the trial draws near, she has no idea what truths will be revealed--both inside the courtroom and out.
