If you like your escapist reading with a large dose of Texas twang, this is the series for you. It is very light-hearted fare; but tomorrow I won't be able to remember the plot.
I like my stories with a bit more substance; I'm glad I listened to it while traveling. It is the only way it would have kept my interest. Narrator Nicole Poole did a fine job with the over-sexed and over-blown plot. The pacing was very uneven; it was pure comedy that alternated with serious issues. To be fair, I've recently read some heavy and emotional stories, so this booked seemed to fit in the bantam-weight class of reading material.
Shirleen Dalton is a very likable heroine; she's basically optimistic and fun-loving. After her husband dies suddenly (he's about 25 years older than his wife), Shirleen loses her palatial home and finds her credit cards maxed out. Yet, she has a smile for folks in town.
Shirleen finds herself in the trailer where she grew up -- on the wrong side of the tracks. Before long, she finds that there are four orphans also residing in the same dingy abode. If that weren't enough drama, one Billy 'Bubba' Wilkes takes up residence in the next trailer and uses his 'good-ol'-boy' persona to become part of the town. However, he is there for nefarious reasons.
Billy thinks he knows all about Mrs. Dalton; he figures that she is a gold-digger that got her just desserts. It doesn't take him long to realize that he's misjudged the lady
Some of the language was pure cornpone and hard to swallow. However, the author seemed earnest in her desire to create a humorous town and fun story. However, I've lived in Texas all my life and I don't know anyone who talks like this. I am sure the author used hyperbole to intensify the humor.
