Excellent historical setting, but the romance takes a back seat to the 1745 rebellion of the Stuart claim to the English throne. Vanessa McIan must support her family during the war, and is separated from Edward Romney, Earl of Linton, whom she loves and has agreed to marry. She returns to her family in the Highlands. Much description is given to the events leading up to the rebellion, and the subsequent battles fought. When her father is killed at the Battle of Culloden, she and her mother retreat to their home. Edward arranges for her family home to be spared the English retaliation if Vanessa will marry him. They spend the first few months of their marriage trying to keep her clan and her home intact, while Vanessa struggles with the love to her brother, who is in hiding with Prince Charles, and running for their lives, and the love for her husband.
