For good old-fashioned storytelling, look to Landis's (Until Tomorrow) eighth-a joyous tale about a late 19th century woman who gives up all for the chance to start over. Eva Eberhart, a dance-hall performer in Cheyenne, Wy., is weary of being manhandled by the patrons of the Palace of Venus Saloon and Dance Hall. A desire for a respectable position prompts her to reply to an ad for a housekeeper at the Trail's End Ranch in the Montana Territory. Eva outfits herself with a ladylike demeanor, a bogus past and a book of household hints and recipes. The embittered ranch owner Chase Cassidy, a former gunslinger and convicted outlaw, is unsure Eva will be able to handle heavy housekeeping, let alone his unruly, teenage nephew, but desperation overshadows doubts. With the help of her book, Eva manages the house and nephew-and ranch owner. But, while Eva's willing to forgive Chase's outlawry, Chase proves himself less forgiving of Eva's past. After All is historical romance at its very best-a combination of high adventure and the magic of love.
