Because I read so many books, most authors fall into predictable patterns in their plotlines. Scarlett Dunn seems to have thrown away the mold. This is a unique cattle drive -- that becomes the backdrop to a whole other adventure. Promise and Matthew Sinclair are traveling to Colorado with a small wagon train. Unfortunately, the small band of travelers are religious and believe that God will protect them and do not take weapons. When one gabby traveler tells strangers they are taking all their earthly belongings, the strangers decide to rob them.
Unfortunately, the robbers kill everyone, except Promise, and tear the train apart looking for money. The women had sewn their money into their dresses and their treasure wasn't found. Indians came upon the robbers and they left. Jake McBride, leader of a cattle drive, heard the gunshots and found Promise, badly hurt. When the robbers found out there was someone who lived, they dogged the cattle drive, trying to kill the only one who could identify them. They were figuring she still had the money also.
At the same time, Victoria, Cole McBride's wife (from the first story), is pregnant and having a difficult time. Promise needs to hide out from the robbers for several months and decides to accompany the McBrides to their home in Wyoming, and take care of the bed-bound woman until the birth of her first child. When a man claiming to be Promise's fiance arrives at the ranch, this sets the stage for conflict between Jake and Charles Worthington.
I just wish all the lead characters weren't so startlingly beautiful and ruggedly handsome. It seemed so unnecessary and shallow. Overall score = 4.5 stars.
