A very interesting book about one man---Leon Lewis---who decides to take on numerous pro-Nazi organizations in Los Angles. With most law enforcement agencies uninterested, if not actually sympathetic to fascist and anti-semitic causes, Lewis had to work hard to get anyone to listen to him. Quite often, the local law enforcement would pass on to the pro-Nazis what Lewis told them.
Over the years, Lewis managed to infiltrate the pro-German organizations with his own spies. Eventually, as World War II neared, the FBI and military intelligence agencies used the information Lewis provided to shut down these organization and arrest the leaders and many members. The FBI and the military took credit for all the work Lewis did, but he didn't care, as he was interested in results.
Although the books doesn't set out to do this, it shows just how J. Edgar Hoover followed his own interests rather than those of his nation. I also found it interesting to read how a young John F. Kennedy donated $100---a lot of money in 1940---to a pro-German, anti-semitic group.
If you find this book interesting, you should also read "Hollywood Party : How Communism Seduced the American Film Industry in the 1930s and 1940s" by Kenneth Lloyd Billingsley.
