Before the Civil War, Broc Kinkaid and other members of his family were successful entertainers. During the horror of war, Broc emerged with a ruined face. Walking away from cruel jibes and looks from others was hard; but Broc usually succeeded.
However, Broc ran out of patience in Cactus Bend; the taunts got to him and Broc found himself in jail. The judge gave him an unusual sentence go collect a debt in 2 weeks and his mistake would be stricken from the records. If he failed, he would spend some quality time getting to know the sheriff and his jail. Kinkaid has a real bad feeling about this but heads to do the judges bidding.
This is my first book by Leigh Greenwood. Other than the hook of the story (the judge sending a miscreant to collect a large debt), this was an engaging tale. I found it hard to accept a judge would do such a thing the judge hinted that it would be a difficult or impossible task.
However, Greenwoods writing style was enjoyable and he kept the pace lively. The theme is getting past someones looks to find the real person within. Greenwood teaches this lesson well: Amanda is very attractive and tired of men only interested in her looks. Broc has come to accept that no one will ever want to spend their life with such a disfigured person.
I didnt learn that this is book 5 of the NIGHT RIDERS series until Id finished the book. I look forward to reading more by Greenwood.
