This is the 9th book in Lindsey's mystery series set in ancient Rome during the time of the Emperor Vespasian and featuring Marcus Falco, an informer, who sometimes works for the Emperor.
Here Marcus and Helena have just returned to Rome from Spain with their baby daughter to find that Marcus's friend Petro has been suspended from the Vigiles and thrown out of his house by his wife, because he is having an affair with the daughter of a notorious gangster.
Since Petro is at loose ends, he decides to "help" Falco with his investigations. He joins just in time, as Falco is soon on the trail of a serial killer who murders during the great Roman festivals. The first clue is that small parts, like hands, are showing up in the Roman water supply.
I love Lindsey's books and I have faithfully followed Falco from book to book, but this one was a bit gruesome for my taste. Still it is a wonderful series.
