The guy at the door was stocky, grizzled and tough. Berkely teacher Barrett Lake thought he looked nothing like a private eye. But he was. The detective was looking for one of Barrett's students, teenager Jane Wahlman. Two weeks earlier Jane had witnessed the brutal stabbling of a high school teacher in a local supermarket. Then she suddenly vanished - was she running for her life? Barrett had no easy answers for the detective. But, like the creative teacher she was, she had an idea. She'd follow Jane's trail if he would break her into the business - of carrying a gun and learning how to see what's hidden in the shadows. Barrett didn't know it yet, but there was a lot more the detective would have to teach her - like how not to become a determined murderer's next victim.
