As a "new" Gothic in the old style, I found this book really fun! Had a bit of Jane Austen's NORTHANGER ABBEY in the sense that the heroine, Emma, when first brought on a wild stormy night to the dark castle/manor house, sees evil around every corner -- which often turns out to be something quite benign! The Bluebeard-like Lord of the Manor, who may have killed all the governesses preceding Emma, is one mystery she takes upon herself to solve. When her inherent practicality kicks in, the story takes a JANE EYRE turn, and after some harrowing adventures with Lord Craven -- her patience and smarts bring the story to a satisfying conclusion. Sweet!
