I liked the first couple of these but my opinion has been trending steadily downward with each book, and now with the 8th I think I've hit the end of my tolerance. The book seems composed entirely of Grimshaw and Ilya arriving at a gruesome corpse just too late to do anything. My memory isn't the best, but I don't remember Ilya as being the sheriff's deputy? And the whole "weak little abused woman who needs help from strong men" thing is really tired. In a good fantasy, you get carried along with the story without worrying about the details - suspension of disbelief they call it - but I couldn't muster it up this time. Like, if the Others tear down all the phone lines between little towns, how do they have internet? How do they call anyone without each place having a central office? And if there was this huge puge of humans which is referenced many times, where is the technology coming from for the internet? Or even cars, for that matter? How is it that humans, who presumably have been fair game for the Others forever, are thinking like top predators? Eh. It is a fast read, and I finished it, but I'm done. Unless I've forgotten it by the time the next book comes out, which is what I think happened this time around.
