This book will most definitely be on my 2009 Top Ten and more likely in the top 5. James McBride is a fantastic writer. I not only felt that I was at St. Anna's, I knew each of the characters on an intimate basis.

If you are looking for a sappy story that glorifies war and soldiers, this is not it. Neither is it blood and gore. It is the story of four Buffalo Soldiers from the army's Negro 92nd Division who spend eleven days during World War II behind enemy lines in the Tuscan village of St. Anna di Stazzema. It is here that they learn about themselves, the villagers, the meaning of war, and the meaning of life. And helping them along the way is a seven year old mute orphaned boy.

If I had a keeper shelf, this would be on it! Five stars!!
