Harry Kraus' "Serenity" is a mystery set at a small hospital in the Outer Banks community of Serenity, North Carolina. Two new staffers join the hospital simultaneously: Dr. Adam Tyson, a surgeon, and head nurse Beth Carlson. Beth is almost immediately the victim of a hit-and-run driver--who turns out to be Tyson, who turns out not really to be a surgeon but a physician's assistant who has taken his late employer's identity. Even so, he's the hero, and licensed or not, he's skilled in the operating room. The villains of the piece are the hospital's CEO and a manipulative nurse, who are engaged in Medicare fraud. Though a trifle preachy, Kraus' mystery is engaging, and his operating-room scenes sparkle.
