If you have read other Hardy works before Madding Crowd, you will quickly recognize his writing style here. The characters and their intricately interwoven relationships to one another drive the story, although the ending is painfully obvious and inevitable. The depth of characters and their toils is the strength of this novel, although Hardy's extraordinarily lengthy setting descriptions become tedious. Overall, an enjoyable read that delivers you to a world that no longer exists - and perhaps never truly did.
