Summary:
Bingo and J'miah are two raccoon brothers that are official scouts for Sugar Man Swamp. Their job is to protect the swampland and to wake up Sugar Man. An alligator wrestler, Jaeger Stitch wants to turn the swamp into an Alligator Wrestling Arena and Theme Park. He will do whatever it takes in order to take over the swamp. The only one that can save the swamp is the Sugar Man, but he's been sleeping for 60 years and just doesn't want to get up. Our two scouts must protect their swamp and wake that man up! Will they be able to do it before it is too late?
My thoughts:
This book is wonderful! It's told from a mixture of animals and human points of view. For a read aloud, this gives the reader a chance for multiple voices. The two raccoons are just adorable and silly. They are rootable characters that just make your heart melt. I was surprised at how funny this book was since it was based more of an adventure tale. Really, there were several laugh out loud moments and some of the antics that everyone gets into are more than chuckle worthy. Appelt has done a very good job of weaving the multiple (there are a lot) characters together all leading towards one goal: controlling the swamp. While this is a lengthier book for a young reader to complete on their own, some nights reading together will definitely have an 8-10 year old enjoying the story. Older children 10-12ish would have no problem reading this alone.
