Dorcas Foley, the heroine, is headstrong but pregnant, and her domineering father marries her off to a short, simian salt raker who lives on Grand Cay; a harsh and inhospitable environment for a lady.
What ensues is a rich and dramatic story of love and loyalty in a fascinating historical context. Dorcas grows to love her simian spouse, and as her now legitimate child grows during a time of political turmoil, history catches up to a family and ends the novel with a shocking and brutal murder.
