This slim volume is the chronicle of one man's life. He leaves his parents' farm to go to university, where he finds a subject that inspires him and a place that is to be his home. His life is quiet and devoid of happiness in many ways, but he is passionate about his work and takes pleasure in small things. Though this doesn't sound like an engaging read, the prose is achingly beautiful. Moreover Stoner's life, which by all rights ought to be depressing, can be seen as his quest to live well and know himself.
My words don't do it justice, this is a stunning book.
