This is a great story capturing the essence of life in ancient China. The customs amongst women, especially the details in footbinding tradition, the women's secret writing, arranged marriages, the interaction of women in a household, etc. The author creates a very vivid tale that keeps you engaged till the end. I was very impressed with this author. Although she is not as well-known as Amy Tan, Lisa See develops characters and carries out a story in an easy to follow and enjoyable manner. As compared to The Bonesetter's Daughter, I prefer Snow Flower and the Secret Fan.
