These stories are based upon incidents and his experiences during the Civil War. He presents all of the brutality and senselessness of armed conflict in his inimitable bitter way. Each story has its own flavor of fatalism ending in a sarcastic twist. In this vein his writing lies somewhere between Poe and O. Henry.
