Paul Johnson is an acknowledged historical analyst. However, I had a problem with the brevity of the text and its lack of supporting material. I thought the section of the economic and historical underpinnings of the Renaissance was excellent and really showed how the world was ready for new ideas based on the classics.
The author made statements without substantive proof. I would have expected there to the footnotes supporting statements. Time-after-time, the author recognizes artwork that demonstrates new ways of thinking of and doing things. However, there are no photographs to help explain the authors' views.
Perhaps the main problem is the fact that this is a short history. I expected more information than I received.
