Second in the series. Start with the beginning is my advice. I do like this series but this entry is slooooow; we don't get much in the way of a case until halfway into the book. While the theme of women empowering themselves is interesting, and the real quotes from all the period misogynists were infuriating, I found the lengthy theological discussions tedious. But then, I'm not much of a one for wanting deep meaning in my books...give me a fast page-turner every time, with twists and turns and lots of action. The motive of the crimes is obvious, and meant to be so, and the villain can be guessed at easily. I did like Mary's resolve in dealing with her kidnapping and the resulting issues. This book is where the romantic relationship between 21-yr-old Mary and 60-year-old Sherlock comes into being...you may, as I do, have to stuff that age difference way in back of your mind to enjoy the series.
