Perhaps the most over-the-top example of the Chronicle Books style is a small, square volume called Patio Daddy-O: '50s Recipes with '90s twist, written by Gideon Bosker, Karen Brooks, and Leland and Crystal Payton. The book pokes fun at the myth of an idyllic suburban America of the 1950s, and the recipes sound suitably scary. "Slab-O-Fun Barbecues Meat Loaf.""Uncle Bob's Peanut Butter Sandwiches with Texas Sweets.""Dragonbreath Corn on the Cob." The fun begins, no doubt, with an "Atomic Cocktail."
You may wonder what you'd get if you actually followed many of these recipes, but despite all their silliness, they are very clearly presented. All the ingredients are grouped together on one convenient list and the procedures are broken into short, easy-to-skim numbered steps.
