I don't remember John Lescroart's books having so much background before he gets to Dismas and Abe. There is a prologue of a few pages that relates to Dismas and Abe and then it's almost 3/4 of the book later when Dismas actually gets the case.
That being said, it is a very very good book about young, 26 year old Second Lieutenant Evan Scholler, sent to Kuwait with his squad, only to find when they get there that no one was expecting them and no one knew what to do with them. He ends up at the Allstrong Security compound and his team is offered the job of security. And this was just the beginning of his troubles. When his girlfriend back home refuses to write to him, he turns to drinking and then things spin out of control when his convoy is attacked and he is badly injured.
When he ends up back in the states, he continues to make really bad choices that have a terrible consequence for him.
